UPDATE: The club collected over 400 lbs of food for our local community and embraced the spirit of the season!!
Florida Elite Tallahassee is partnering with Second Harvest of the
Big Bend to collect food for those in our community in need this holiday
season. Second
Harvest of the Big Bend food bank works with a network of 135 partner
agencies across 11 counties in the Big Bend to distribute enough healthy
and nutritious food each year for 11.5 million meals. They educate and
engage the community in the fight against hunger, and they rely on
assistance from individuals, businesses and organizations like ours who
share their commitment to a healthy community.
We
will have collection boxes at the Meadows under the pavilion by Field 7
during practice this week and next. We will continue to collect at the
Meadows Thursday, December 3, Thursday, December 10 and Saturday,
December 12. What items should you donate? Second Harvest is always in need of the “super six” items: canned fruits, canned vegetables, canned meats (tuna, chicken), cereal, hearty soup/stew and peanut butter. Items that CANNOT
be accepted include rusty or unlabeled products, perishable items,
homemade items, alcoholic beverages, open or used items.
COVID-19 has had a major impact in the Big Bend as the statistics below indicate.
- Almost 30% of the population (150,000 citizens) are food insecure
- 52,000 additional people are struggling to find their next meal
- 31,000 Big Bend children are experiencing hunger on a regular basis
- In Leon County, child food insecurity is up more than 56%
Please consider donating to our food drive and help us help others in our community this holiday season.
